Life enhancing art

Fabien Fryns strongly believes that everyone should be interested in art simply because it’s life enhancing. At its best, contemporary art can be provocative, innovative and inspiring.

With the stock market proving to be far less predictable than the experts have lead us to believe, investing in contemporary art presents itself as a viable and interesting alternative. It is also “very affordable, much more affordable than most people think.” according to Belgian born art dealer Fabien Fryns whose gallery at the Marbella Club specialises in international contemporary art.
Despite a high media profile in the 1990s when the advertising magnate Charles Saachi began investing large sums in the work of controversial artists such as Damien Hurst, the Chapman Brothers and Tracy Emin, contemporary art often generates a degree of resistance. But it’s worth remembering that the appreciation of art is often retrospective, making it suitable for long term investment and it behoves us not to forget that artists now considered great, such as Picasso and Warhol, were derided in their own time by the general public.

Fabien Fryns began buying from contemporary artists when he was in his mid teens and says that one of the best aspects of being a collector of current works is developing relationships with the artists themselves as it adds a very personal dimension to the collection.
The contemporary art market today is highly competitive and fast moving. Dealers, eager to spot the next Damien Hirst, snap up work from art schools as soon as it appears and there’s little time for new artists to mature. Fabien states that so much work is being produced now that it becomes difficult to know which artist will have lasting appeal and he thinks that many artists today will be unknown in a few years’ time. It’s imperative therefore to have the best guidance and who better than someone who has always been passionate about contemporary art. Fabien travels extensively to maintain his highly detailed knowledge of the art market and to source works from the artists themselves and clearly has a flair for spotting future greats. He says that it’s important to have the confidence to go against the market, a talent which has proved remarkably prescient in recent years. In 1987 he bought a painting by Jean Michel Basquiat from a dealer only too happy pass on the work of an artist then in decline. A painting by Basquiat recently made an all time auction high of $5,000,000.
Top tips for the future? Fabien says that some excellent work is being produced in China, particularly photography, (Wang Qingson) and in South America (Nadin Ospina), and for those of you who believe contemporary art to be inaccessible, the work of Robert Silvers will surely change your minds.
